Night Skies, Chickens, and The Coming Rain

I remain uncertain where the month of September has gone, but the end of summer is here.  The days are shorter, the dawn chorus of birdsong has faded and the leaves are turning colour and beginning to carpet the ground.  Each morning opens with a cool, bright and misty start.  But before I load up the wood burner, shifting where I spend time in the house, I find myself reflecting on the beauty of this recent summer.  When our niece, a photographer, was here in August she spent many hours capturing the night sky, the birds, and the changing weather.  What follows are some of Charlotte’s photos.

  1. Some lovely photo’s and we vote for ‘Are you talking to me?’ as the best picture 😉

Stunning pictures and what a beautiful post to wake up to on a grey Brighton morning. Thank you!xxx

PS: I couldn’t believe my luck when ‘marmelade’, a mini version of Bill’s, opened just around the corner from me a few weeks ago. Two of their former staff took over a little cafe and turned it into a brilliant industrial chic miniature version of its big brother in Lewes. You’d love it Catherine and I will take you there next time you travel to the East country. x

    Fantastic photos Catherine.
Your nieces website has some stunners in there too.

    • Thanks Rosie’s Dad. Yes, Charlotte has a talent. No doubt she’ll be thrilled to know you’ve checked out her website, too. Please let Rosie know that the potatoes are yummy, the onions are nearing their end (as in we’ve eaten them) and the winter bed is now planted….come on brussel sprouts!

I remember well those Dartmoor Septembers. Always an iffy month!

    • One among the many iffy months. This time last year we were weeks into wet and cold, so far, it is only the wet which has begun (about a week ago) and even that hasn’t been all that miserable. Word has it, cold is moving in tonight so I will be loading up that woodburner!

Those photos are extremely well done. My favourite has got to be ‘Here comes the rain’. It is so well composed and captures the rainy-ness of the day, which isn’t always easy to do.

    • I agree. That little bird in the mist and damp, before it started to rain, makes you feel the wetness that can be part of being on Dartmoor. Charlotte did an excellent job capturing that. Of course, she was soaking wet when she came back inside!

Exquisite pics. And rather smart captions too. You should have a quiz to spot the musical references. I think I noticed The Wonder Stuff (with Vic Reeves).

  10. Lovely photos, especially the circular stars – I’ve always wanted to be able to do that. And do I detect a faint whiff of insidious Bubblegum Pop emanating – “like a whirlpool it never ends…?” Tommy Roe, 1969, never thought of since… or then for that matter. RH

    • I hope that tune hasn’t worked its way deep into your memory. Recently for weeks I had a Jefferson Airplane song in my head. It was fine at first, but then it went on and on……Glad you enjoyed the blog.
